Ludwig van Beethoven is widely regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time and is frequently cited as the gold standard for all. Beethoven was incredibly adept at composing the piano sonata. He worked on these consistently throughout his life and created 32, all of which are amazing bodies of work. However, certain pieces stand out among all others.

Sonata Number 17 Op.31 No 3 in D minor
This sonata, also known as the Tempest, is one of Beethoven’s most famous sonatas from his middle period and was written between 1801 and 1802. From a narrative standpoint, it depicts a significant amount of tragedy, and pianists consider it one of Beethoven’s darkest sonatas.

Sonata Number 29 Op.106 in Bb major
Due to the titanic dimensions of this piece, also known as the Hammerklavier Sonata, pianists consider it to be one of the most challenging piano pieces. However, despite its difficulty, it is regarded as one of Beethoven’s masterpieces, but it is not as well known as the others due to its technicalities and length.
